How to choose laboratory-grown diamond earrings
Earrings are the piece people wear most and think about least. A good pair goes with everything for years, so it is worth getting three things right: the style, the size, and how they sit on the ear.
In short
Choose studs for every day, hoops for movement and drops for occasions. Earring carat figures are for the pair, so a "1 ct" pair is two half-carat stones, which look generous on most ears. Above 1 carat each, a laboratory-grown stone comes with its own IGI report. Today a pair of 2.50 ct round solitaire studs costs ₹1,10,500 in 14K gold.
Studs, drops or hoops
- Studs sit on the lobe. They are the everyday pair, worn with work clothes, at the gym and to a wedding. If you buy one pair, buy studs. See our stud earrings.
- Drops hang below the lobe and move as you turn your head, catching more light. They lengthen the neck and suit occasions and evenings. See our drop earrings.
- Hoops and huggies circle the lobe. Huggies sit close and are comfortable enough to sleep in; larger hoops make more of a statement. See our hoops and huggies.
Carat weight is for the pair
This is the most common confusion. An earring's carat figure is almost always the total for both ears. A pair listed as 1.00 ct total is two stones of about 0.50 ct each.
As a guide, a round stone of about half a carat measures about 5 mm across, and a round 1.25 ct stone about 7 mm: our round solitaire studs use two 7 mm stones, 2.50 ct for the pair.
- Up to 0.25 ct each: delicate, for every day and for second piercings.
- About 0.50 ct each: generous and still everyday. The size most people picture.
- 1 ct each and above: a statement, especially in a halo.
Above 1 carat each, a laboratory-grown stone comes with its own IGI report.
Shape and face
There are no rules, but a few things help:
- Round stones sparkle most and suit every face.
- Pear and marquise stones are long, so they draw the eye down and suit round or wide faces. See the pear solitaire studs.
- Clusters and halos gather small stones into one larger shape, so they look bigger and brighter than their carat weight suggests, and cost less than one large stone of the same size.
- Drops suit short hair and open necklines best, where they can be seen.
Laboratory-grown diamond or moissanite
Both are offered in every pair we make. A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond; ours are E–F colour and VVS–VS clarity. Moissanite is a different, very hard stone with more coloured sparkle, at a much lower price: the same 2.50 ct round studs cost ₹32,700 with moissanite in 14K gold. See laboratory-grown diamond or moissanite.
Gold or silver
Earrings take less wear than a ring, so lighter options make sense here.
- 9K and 14K gold are hard and suit daily wear. 18K has a deeper colour. Our 9K, 14K and 18K gold is BIS hallmarked.
- Silver, rhodium-plated or gold-plated, brings the price right down for occasional pairs. The plating wears with time; we polish silver free and re-plate it at cost.
- If an ear reacts to some metals, choose gold over silver and ask us before ordering.
What to check before you buy
- That the carat figure is clearly per pair or per earring.
- How the earring fastens, and that the back holds firmly, especially for heavier drops.
- That the price includes GST and delivery.
- The returns policy. Ours is 7 days from delivery, with the tag still attached.
Our earrings are made to order in Surat in about 15 days, photographed before they ship, and delivered free across India.
